Prep Team Program

PROGRAM MISSION

The main mission of the prep program is to maximize our player's chances of attaining a scholarship to play post-secondary basketball, whether that be in the USA or Canada.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)

There are a number of key indicators that we will measure to understand how effectively we are meeting our program mission. While winning games is always great and helpful when it comes to playing in higher-profile events for more exposure, winning games is not the top objective.

1) POST-SECONDARY SCHOLARSHIPS - The main KPI is what percentage of our prep athletes go on to play post-secondary basketball.

2) VOLUME OF OFFERS - What volume of offers are our players getting from schools? For example, is each player only getting one offer and then having to go to that school or do our players get multiple offers and then they decide where they wish to do it?

3) INDIVIDUAL IMPROVEMENT - How much the players have improved their skills while playing for the prep team. We use a number of different empirical metrics to record progress.

A) Shooting testing - every week the athletes perform a series of tests related to their shooting ability. Over the course of the year we can see the progression trend that each individual athlete is on.

B) Fitness testing - Over the course of the season, we will have 4 major fitness testing periods as well as sporadic mini-tests for key metrics such as: Vertical leap, Broad jump and ¾ court sprint

C) In-game stat analysis - Each team will have comprehensive stats taken during the game. The coaching staff will be able to compare stats and practice performance in order to be able to maximize player training.

TEAMS

Once the program is fully formed, we are looking to have eight teams, one for each grade (9 to 12) for both the boys and girls side.

LOGISTICS

Being able to optimize the athlete’s schedules is key for their success both on and off the court. The entire program is designed to give athletes a balanced schedule in order to be able to get their school work done while also having an intense training schedule.

PRACTICE STRUCTURE

VOLUME - The players will practice 5 times per week with roughly 2.5 hours of practice per day. The workouts will be split up into four branches. The team and individual components will be done at the facility during practice times.

1) Team practice - Athletes will practice as a team to work on the tactical part of the game. Playing and training with kids who are of a similar skill level and mindset on a daily basis will help them improve their on court skills and IQ.

2) Individual skill development - A huge part of our program is the development of the individual athlete. We believe that if we focus on the development of the individual athlete, that the team will grow in lockstep.

3) Fitness Training - The athletes will have fitness training 2 - 4 times per week, depending on the stage of the season and the training cycle.

4) IQ development - The athletes will spend at least two hours per week analyzing game tape (once games start being played). Most of the game tape will be done online but there will also be in-person sessions.

DAILY SCHEDULE

The daily training schedule would flow with the school’s timetable. High school schedules flip in the afternoons. So practices would follow the high school schedule so that athletes always miss the same class (that they will get a credit for online).

If students are missing the last period of the day:

Pickup at 2PM - Practice is from 2:15 to 4:45PM (2.5 hours)

If students are missing period three:

Pickup - 11:45AM - Practice is from Noon to 1:40PM (100 minutes)

Drop-off back at school for the last class.

SEASON LENGTH

The season would start in September at the start of the school year. The season would end after the last NCAA live event which is generally at the end of June or the first week in July. The approximate length of the season would be 10 months.

The parents and athletes would get the entire plan for the season before the start of the year so that everyone is aware of the scheduling and commitment required for the season.

If the season does stretch into the summer, the teams would have a modified training schedule as the facility would be in use until 5PM for camps.

TRYOUTS

The plan is to hold tryouts in March of 2025 for the 2025/2026 season. This will allow the staff to properly prepare for the season and know what their rosters will look like for the upcoming season.

The cost for the tryout will be $30. Each age group will have at least two tryouts and potentially more,  depending on the number of players we have attending the tryouts.

ACADEMICS

It is extremely important to the club that athletes are still able to get a comprehensive and quality education while playing for our prep team.

COURSE LOAD

Students will take six courses at their home school over the course of the year. The other two courses per year will be taken online via the TDSB online platform that the school will organize. This combination will ensure that each student gets the full 8 credits they need.

The club will work with the school to ensure that students can get as many of the core credits (math, science, english) at school as possible, while taking optional classes online.

SCHOOLS

The prep team will allow students to stay at their home schools with the caveat that they get approval from the principal. The principal as well as the parents would have to sign paperwork provided by the club that the athlete is allowed to take 3 courses at the school and one online in order to be eligible for the prep program. This way there will not be any issues over course scheduling during the course of the school year.

Transportation - The club and the family will have to agree on transportation from school to practice. As a club we will not have the time to pick up athletes from 5 or 6 different locations and still make practice for 2:15/2:30PM.

List of approved schools - This is a list of schools that we consider to fall within a reasonable radius for our prep program. If you do not see your school listed below, please contact us and we can approve another location if the club deems it to be appropriate.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE

The teams would have a combination of league play combined with tournaments in both Canada and the USA.

COMPETITIVE OPTIONS

OSBA - In order for the team to be eligible to play in the OSBA all of the athletes would have to attend the same school. Therefore this may not be possible in the first few years but it is all dependent on the number of kids we get and if we are able to find a permanent home school.

North Pole Hoops Prep League (boys) - NPH has a league that is dedicated to prep teams. If we are not able to play in the OSBA, then this would be our alternative.

Juel Basketball (girls) - The alternative for the girls would be to get a team into the Juel league where they can compete at a high level.

NCAA live events - All of the teams would attend every live period in the USA in order to gain exposure to USA coaches and programs.

Tournaments - The teams would participate in a number of other tournaments that are both in the USA and Canada. The tournaments would be chosen based on the level of the team.

Exhibition games - The club would also schedule exhibition games against other programs as a way to get more game time for the players.

COMPETITIVE LOAD

Teams would be looking to play around 40 to 45 games per season. While quantity is important, the club will focus on the quality of the games. We want to ensure that each game that the team plays is furthering the club’s mission.

COST

The cost of the prep program would be $8,500 for the season. This cost covers the following:

Practices - 12 to 15 hours of practice time per week (this includes the fitness portion).

Competitions - Covers all of the fees associated with entering leagues and tournaments that the team will play over the course of the season.

Transportation

Drop-off to school after practice or pickup before practice (depending on the team practice schedule).

To games and back (gather point will be the facility). This includes tournaments in the USA. The athletes will travel together as a team.

Apparel - Game jerseys, tracksuits and other apparel that the kids will get on an annual basis.

Hotels - Any tournaments that require the kids to stay overnight will be paid for by the club. The athletes will be rooming together. Parents who wish to travel to see the kids play will be responsible for getting their own rooms.

**The only cost that will not be covered by the team is food while traveling. Parents will be responsible for providing funds for their athletes while on the road.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

The $8,500 will be divided into installments in order to make payment more manageable.

Deposit - There will be a $2,500 deposit to be paid after the tryouts have completed and the team has been selected. THIS AMOUNT IS NON-REFUNDABLE if we end up having a team.

Installments - Between September and February there will be a $600 per month installment. The full $8,500 needs to be paid before the end of February.
